Heal Candida Naturally:

Candida Albicans is a fungal yeast that occurs naturally in the human body. It naturally lives in harmony with a variety of other microorganisms and actually performs some important functions. The problem occurs when certain lifestyle based environmental conditions upset the balance of microflora in the body. This allows the yeast to proliferate and dominate certain regions of the body. Certain lifestyle measures must be taken to heal Candida and regain balance and health in the internal ecosystem

Candida normally resides in the mucous membranes of the intestinal tract, mouth, throat, and genitals. When overgrowth occurs, Candida has the ability to burrow holes in the intestinal tract and enter the bloodstream (1, 2).

Candida and Toxic Metabolites:

Once it gets into the bloodstream it is able to make its way into any organ or region of the body. The worst part is that it emits over 70 different toxins into the bloodstream and body (3). The body will often create an immune response to Candida and its various toxins. This causes higher inflammatory levels during periods of overgrowth.

The liver has to detoxify the various toxic elements. When Candida is present in high amounts for a long period of time it overwhelms the liver which causes increased whole body toxicity and immune dysregulation which leads to higher inflammatory loads and possible auto-immunity or cancer development.

Candida Toxins and Liver Dysfunction:

There are 70 different toxins released by Candida when it is alive and often even more are released as massive colonies are dying off. This is why we may have a whole host of symptoms while the Candida is alive and propagating and sometimes even worse symptoms as it dies off.

1. Acetaldehyde:  In Candida, acetaldehyde is a metabolic byproduct—similar to the carbon dioxide that you exhale after inhaling oxygen (4, 5, 6). High levels of acetaldehyde lead to oxidative stress and inflammation. This damages the DNA and increases the risk of cancer development (7, 8, 9).

Too much acetaldehyde is the equivalent of alcohol poisoning—an accumulation of acetaldehyde is associated with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (10). There is also evidence that the toxin acetaldehyde is associated with Alzheimer’s disease (11).

2. Gliotoxin:  Another major toxin created by yeast is gliotoxin (12). This suppresses the immune system and kills key immune cells (13). It also destroys liver cells, which impairs the livers ability to deactivate toxins (13, 14). A weak liver further reduces immune activity and promotes a greater degree of autoimmunity.

Several studies have found that gliotoxin is high in patients with MS (multiple sclerosis), an autoimmune disease that affects the nervous system and brain (15, 16, 17). These are just 2 of 70 highly toxic metabolites.

These toxins help Candida protect itself against the host immune system which allows it to thrive. Studies have found that once yeast forms a biofilm—or a protective matrix around itself—the biofilm increases the production of acetaldehyde and gliotoxin (18). This is why it is so important to find strategies to heal candida, which dramatically will reduce your inflammatory load.

10 Common Candida Symptoms

Developing a Candida Overgrowth:

Everyone has Candida as they are a normal part of our microbial environment. However, when environmental conditions favor their growth, they can overpopulate the microbiome and cause the problems listed above (19).

The healthy bacteria in your gut typically keep your candida levels in check. However, several factors can cause the candida population to get out of hand:

  • Eating a diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugar (which feed the yeast)
  • Consuming a lot of alcohol
  • Drinking tap water with chlorine and disinfectant byproducts
  • Taking oral contraceptives
  • Living a high-stress lifestyle
  • Taking a round of antibiotics that killed too many of those friendly bacteria
  • Using antacids for heartburn
  • Smoking
  • High mercury in blood and tissue from dental amalgams and/or vaccines and/or inherited from mom
  • Sexual intercourse with someone with a vaginal or penal yeast overgrowth

Diagnosing Candida Overgrowth:

Your holistic practitioner will have conclusive means of testing for candida, and I personally use a comprehensive stool analysis here as it is the most accurate way to diagnose Candida overgrowth. This is the first step toward a program to heal candida naturally.

If you want a quick, cheap test on your own, I would begin by doing a simple home spit test as follows.

1.  Glass of Water:  Prepare a glass of water at room temperature.

2.  Have a Good Spit:  Work up a bit of saliva, and spit it into the glass of water. Check the water every 15 minutes or so for up to one hour.

3.  Observe the Movement of the Strings:  Your saliva should stay at the top in a cohesive blob. If you see strings (fibers) traveling down into the water from the saliva floating on the top, cloudy specks (particles suspended in the water), or cloudy saliva that sinks to the bottom of the glass you have a candida problem.

If you have allergies or have recently eaten some dairy products, you will likely test ‘positive’ on the spittle test. Dehydration can also lead to a positive reading, which means that you are far more likely to test positive after you wake in the morning.

Additional Testing For Candida:

There are 2 confirmative tests for Candida overgrowth in the body. At DrJockers.com, we use an Organic Acid test (OAT) as our primary test for this. The OAT is a simple at home urine test that looks at key metabolites of bacterial, yeast, and mitochondrial metabolism.

On the OAT, if we see high markers for yeast overgrowth then we know there are elevations in yeast and fungal compounds in the body. We can also do an at home stool sample that looks for yeast DNA in the stool. This will also assess for bacterial levels, parasites, and gut inflammation levels.

I personally like to see the OAT first as it gives a tremendous amount of information in regard to cellular health, mitochondrial function, neurotransmitters, B vitamins, and more in addition to the bacterial and yeast markers.

5 Steps to Beating Candida:

There is no way to heal candida and reduce your microbial load long-term without successfully accomplishing these steps

1.  Nutrition that Starves Candida:  Yeast organisms need fuel to grow and proliferate. Starve them of their fuel sources and it slows their growth.

2.  Anti-Microbial Support:  Nature provides herbs that naturally kill off Candida and bad bacteria. These are key tools to reducing your yeast load to heal candida overgrowth.

3.  Improve Liver Function:  The liver is damaged in candida and needs support. A poor functioning liver leads to chronic inflammation and immune suppression.

4.  Strengthen the Immune System:  The immune system must be supported in order to fend off high levels of yeast and prevent it from returning.

5.  Restoring the Gut Lining:  Repairing the gut lining with key nutrients and replenishing the gut with healthy microbes is essential for long-term health.

Anti-Candida Nutrition Plan:

The first step in overcoming Candida is to starve it to death. This is done by eliminating all sugars and anything that turns into sugars. Candida loves sugar and anything that turns into sugar, so a lower carbohydrate diet is critical to getting well (20).

Most individuals with Candida have serious gluten sensitivities. It is very important to eliminate all gluten containing grains and most grains together other than small amounts of quinoa or small amounts of root vegetables such as beets, sweet potatoes, and squash from time to time.

The anti-candida diet consists mainly of phytonutrient rich vegetables, healthy fats, and clean proteins. This is the same nutrition plan that I recommend for my leaky gut patients who suffer with issues like Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), irritable bowel syndrome, and other digestive complaints. My experience is that individuals with Candida often have several other issues such as SIBO.

Key Components of Anti-Candida Nutrition

Non-starchy vegetables and antioxidant rich herbs are the best sources for critical immune-boosting phytonutrients. Healthy fat sources include coconut products, avocados, olive oil, nuts, & seeds. Healthy protein includes wild-caught fish, grass-fed red meat, and free-range chicken, turkey, and eggs.

I also recommend lots of coconut oil and grass-fed ghee (clarified butter). These contain small and medium chain fats that are anti-fungal and provide a great energy source for the body. I have my candida patients add 4–6 full tablespoons of coconut oil each day to their diet. These healthy fats are a foundational strategy to heal candida.

They can do this by putting 2 tbsps. in a protein shake, add a tbsp. to organic coffee or tea, cooking meat and vegetables with 2 tbsps. of coconut oil and adding melting extra coconut oil over finished steamed or sautéed vegetables.

Fermented Foods and Candida:

Progenic (life supporting) bacteria compete with Candida for attachment sites and nutrition. Additionally, these good bacteria release anti-fungal compounds that keep Candida from overgrowing. Adding mega-doses of good bacteria into the body is a critical step to healing Candida.

I have found that many individuals with Candida overgrowth are unable to tolerate fermented foods right away. This is because most fermented foods contain wild types of Candida. These wild types are typically good for most people but individuals with Candida overgrowth often have a heightened IgG inflammatory response to any yeast forms.

Consuming fermented foods can cause more inflammation and further Candida progression for many individuals struggling with Candida. I recommend a 30 day period with less fermented foods (perhaps some unflavored coconut yogurt is fine) while we work on killing off the bad microbes.

After the initial period, adding in organic forms of sauerkraut, kimchi, coconut kefir, and fermented grass-fed dairy can be great. Begin with small amounts (1–2 tbsps. daily) and gradually add in more over time. Observe for any recurrence of symptoms and modify as needed while you heal candida overgrowth in your body.

Soil Based Probiotics and Candida:

I recommend a soil-based probiotic that also contains S Boulardi and researched strains of lactobacillus and bifidobacterium to overcome Candiasis. The SBO Probiotics – Ultimate contains a proprietary formula of humic and fulvic acids that help support the growth and development of the good microbes within the intestinal tract.

Both humic and fulvic acids are major organic constituents of soil, coal, streams, lakes, and ocean water. They help to bind and eliminate yeast organisms while the spore forming microbes compete with the attachment sites in the gut and help to kick out the yeast and bad bacteria (21).

heal candida

Anti-Microbial Support:

We need to use natural anti-microbial support to heal candida. Certain foods have very powerful anti-fungal properties. Coconut oil is extremely rich in lauric acid, which is one of the best natural anti-fungals (22). Protocols to heal candida overgrowth should consist of 4-6+ tablespoons of coconut oil daily. This includes coconut oil added to our skin and coconut oil added to foods and used for cooking.

Candida infections drain the body of trace minerals, alkaline salts, and antioxidant reserves. To heal candida, one needs to consume substantial amounts of powerful antioxidant rich, anti-inflammatory herbs such as cinnamon, turmeric, green tea, and ginger.

Improve Liver Function:

A lifestyle that supports liver detoxification includes reducing toxic exposure while simultaneously enhancing immunity, and rebuilding glutathione levels, sulfur compounds, and methylation.

We use the phrase, “Bitter is good for the liver,” to help us remember that bitter herbs are especially good for the liver and the body’s detoxification process.

Using detoxification techniques such as Epsom salt baths, coffee enemas, oil pulling, dry brushing, intermittent fasting, water flushing & infrared sauna are especially helpful for strengthening the liver. These should be done whenever possible along with consuming liver healthy foods.

Strengthen the Immune System:

Candida overgrowth wears down the immune system. Strengthening the immune system is super critical to recovery. This begins with supporting the gut immune response in secretory IgA.

Secretory IgA is the secreted form of an antibody in the blood called IgA. IgA is produced in the blood, taken into the gut, and secreted across the mucosal lining into that mucous layer that is the surface lining of our digestive tract. It is the mucosal immune barrier or first line immune defense (23).

Everything we have already discussed helps provide an environment for healthy sIgA levels. I have my clients further support IgA production with quercetin, resveratrol, vitamin D, vitamin A, selenium, zinc, vitamin C, N-Acetyl Cysteine, vitamin K2, and magnesium. This is why we created ImmunoCharge which has clinical dosages of these key immune nutrients.

Each ImmunoCharge capsule contains the same amount of powerful immune modulating compounds.  These include quercetin, resveratrol, vitamin D, vitamin A, selenium, zinc, vitamin C, N-Acetyl Cysteine, vitamin K2, and magnesium.

These ingredients support the body’s natural immune mechanism to help maintain good health.  Rather than taking multiple different supplements to get these key nutrients, you can get the clinical dosages within 4 capsules daily of ImmunoCharge.  I recommend taking 2 capsules twice daily with meals.

Restoring the Gut Lining:

Candida destroys the gut lining leading to leaky gut and multiple food sensitivities. Once we get the Candida population under control we need to do everything possible to restore the integrity of the gut lining.

The nutrition plan starts the process but adding in extra bone broth, aloe vera, slippery elm tea, and L-glutamine are all vital strategies for rebuilding the gut lining. I recommend my clients drink 24–32 oz. of bone broth daily if possible to strengthen the gut lining.

In addition, we want to support the liver detoxification and gut healing process with things like B Vitamins, glutathione precursors, ginger, turmeric, MSM, quercetin, zinc, and other anti-inflammatory compounds. We have all of these compounds, a complete liver, bile duct, and gut healing complex in our easy to use and great tasting Gut Healing Protein.

I have clients use 1–2 scoops in a shake 1–2x daily depending upon the severity of their condition and how well they can tolerate solid foods. For many clients, I have them do a week of liquid foods (broth, herbal teas, gut healing smoothies, etc) to repair the gut before adding back solid foods.

Supplements to Overcome Candida:

This is an advanced supplement protocol to help someone break through and heal Candida once and for all. This goes along with a nutrient dense, leaky gut nutrition plan and healthy lifestyle habits.

We need to utilize clinically proven anti-microbials to reduce the yeast load while we support the liver and microbiome so we can effectively eliminate the toxic debris that will be released. Additionally, we have to support the weakened digestive and immune systems in order to prevent the Candida from reinfection within the system and growing back stronger than ever.

  1. Thank you Dr. Jockers! I really enjoy your newsletters. Your information so helpful. I’ve been working on eating ketogenic now since Oct 2014; your articles help me in my efforts. We need more doctors thinking & practicing like you. You’re a blessing.

  2. Dr Jockers,

I follow Dr Wallach’s recommendation to remove all vegetable oils from my diet. Only animal fats of grass fed butter, tallow, and lard are recommended. He discusses his many autopsies that showed him that all vegetable oils oxidize internally resulting in many ailments. He said that coconut oil is the slowest to oxidize, but it still oxidizes. What are your thoughts to oil oxidation in the body?

    Thanks,
    Todd

    1. Hey Todd, I agree that most vegetable oils do oxidize but coconut oil does not because it is 90% saturated fat which is actually more than butter, lard or tallow. Saturated fats do not oxidize. Only monounsaturated and polyunsaturated which are found in highest concentrations in vegetable oils and things like fish oil.

  3. Hi Dr. Jockers,

I’ve read that colloidal silver has antifungal properties and can kill yeast, and yet I’ve never seen it suggested online for killing off candida in the body. Is there a reason for that? I’ve read it can kill off both good and bad gut bacteria, is that true?

I started wondering this because I think I have a candida overgrowth in my gut. I’ve been struggling with eczema (self diagnosed) on my hands for about a year and more recently I developed fungus on the toes on my left foot. I tried the AIP diet for a month with little success. The only thing I have found to work so far is to apply colloidal silver gel topically to my hands. I’ve been doing it for a week and I’m in shock how great my hands are looking. They aren’t 100% better but each day they get a little better. I wondered if I took colloidal silver internally that it would kill off the candida.

Thanks for your help and all your resources.

    1. Yes Colloidal silver can be very helpful. I recommend making sure you are taking probiotics as well to support your GI system while using colloidal silver. Great to hear you are doing so much better!

    2. The AIP diet worked wonders for my inflammation (I took in large amounts of bone broth and root veg especially the green kind) until I had a glass of wine! 🙁 then I immediately got Candida overgrowth! I will go back on it as soon as I’m done with my Candida diet. Glad to hear your hands are better, thank you for the advice! Think I will try the silver too 🙂

  4. I’ve read lots of statements on line and 95 % say colloidal silver has no benefits, I’m trying to cure Candida and mot sure what to believe, I’m on a strict diet, but don’t want to make my condition worse, set me straight please

  5. I thoroughly enjoyed the videos on candida of which I have had for too many years. After much research I paid attention to no sugar, I already was eating organic . I learned even a snitch of sugar ,wine, etc caused the candida to get worse. Different attempts at taking supplements also did not work. Through research I came upon Dr. Eruc Bakker, New Zealand who has worked with candida for 27 years. Recently I decided to try his supplements and they worked. The candida seems to be under control but know sticking to the diet is very important . If in a situation where the only choice is to eat what is served, I can feel the difference. Am I correct in assuming this is a life time problem, candida is hiding & waiting to be fed? I did have the OATS test a couple of years ago and will repeat it this fall. Thank you for your information. At the time candida was first diagnosed there was very little info except cut sugar and fruits. I have learned to make desserts using xylitol, monk fruit and stevia. People need to be informed not all stevia is good. I definitely will continue learning from you.

    1. So happy you’ve found something that works for you Eileen! Unfortunately single supplements are not enough to kick a candida overgrowth. It requires a much more in-depth approach that can be outlined through one-on-one coaching!

      1. is candida Albican contagious from me to dogs, cats and birds?

is candida albican contagious to dogs, cats, birds ?

  6. I have been on the diet for one month now but still my vagina still smells awfully(vaginal yeast infection)How long will it take for it to end and how will I know that its ending? Thanks in advance.

  7. hi I have 41 and have been suffering from relapsing candida for two years, come back every month. what can I do? I live in Italy

  8. I began the candida diet and had no die off symptoms, I was also using paudarco and oregano oil but I didn’t have die off symptoms I don’t think. I have fluid retention for the last three years despite eating extremely healthy, intermittent fasting and abstaining from sugars. I workout like a champion and I still can’t figure out the fluid retention in my lower and upper arms and lower and upper legs. I just wondered in your experience or research, is this type of fluid retention I’ve described likely to be candida? I have no other symptoms of candida listed in quizzes etc. except a costed white film on tongue in morning. I also use trampoline bouncing for the fluid retention but nothing ever changes, it’s constant and there are no periods when I don’t have fluid retention. I have muscles and can do push-ups all the time etc. um strong but the fluid never changes. I also suffer from cystic body acne but not on my face, mostly the shoulders and back. I have searched endlessly for answers/help I went to a top naturopathic doctor but she couldn’t figure out the fluid retention either. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

    1. Lime water is definitely something I’ve found that is great for the lymph system and helping get rid of candida.

  9. Are itching and a powdery wet substance in the vagina enough signs for candida. Is nystatin pessaries a good treatment.
    Thank you

  10. Hello,
In Summer 2018, I suffered from BV, two candida infection. one was glabrata. The gyno prescribed regular fluconazole. The bv and one candida went away. I noticed I was still having burning and slight itchiness. My gyno conducted another swab I still had glabrata. He prescribed more fluconazole and boric acid. The symptoms never improved so I let it be. It is 2020 and needless to say I went for another swab and I still have glabrata. This new gyno prescribed a special formulated cream that I couldn’t afford. I called the office to let her know, she offered to prescribe the same fluconazole and boric acid that didnt help in the first place. I am so disappointed in the healthcare system. Most doctors knows nothing about the body. They were taught to prescribe prescribe prescribe. How you going to offer to put me back on meds that will not work. Also in summer 18 I noticed that I had trouble sleeping and around that time frame I started gaining weight rapidly.
I went from 152-155 to a whooping 190 pounds by the time it was January 2019. I tried to talk to my dr about it. He thinks it’s because I’m pigging out. He said oh watch your diet. Since 8 grade I’ve suffered from eczema and food sensitivity. I’ve been doing research on healing myself since high school. It’s so hard to change my diet. What are your take on this Dr. Jocker?

  11. Hi Dr. Jockers,

Thank you so much for this information. I was wondering why the support pack doesn’t include the SBO probiotic and the Immunocharge supplements that you recommended as well? Do these need to be added separately, along with everything in the support pack? Or is the support pack enough?
    Thank you!
    Sarah

  12. On 13th august, itching started on my penis tip…. after 2 days i.e on 15th august morning i found a red dot developed on my penis head… but there is no itching now… i googled it and came to know it is an yeast infection…. due to corona i can’t go to hospital right now….. so please help me to this yeast infection with some home remedies…
    Thank you.

  13. How long do you have to take the supplements you offer in a package deal to eliminate the Candida etc? Thanks

  14. Hi Dr. Jockers, I’m so glad I recently found you! Your articles are very helpful. For 6-7 years I have been struggling to get to the cause of a few symptoms, chronic diarrhea (yes for years non stop), skin itching, chronic cough that comes and goes, phlegm and cough when eating, heart palpitations and lots of anxiety. No doctor has been able to figure it out yet and I’ve attributed it all to stress. My holistic doctor did pick up on the fact that candida showed up on my lab results. Do you think all my symptoms could be the candida? I am going to start following your suggestions. Thank you!

  15. I’ve started taking everything in the Candida Support Pack along with a strict candida free diet. Around days 22-26 of this I began to feel pretty bad in my teeth/gums, then it changed to my neck, upper back shoulders as if my muscles were very sore. The pain prevented me from sleeping at night. I decided to stop taking the antifungals and continue on the same healthy foods/diet and continue taking the Gut Healing Protein. I’ve not reintroduced unhealthy foods, or anything that would add to candida again. After about two weeks I am starting to feel normal again and sleeping mostly normal again with the soreness in my neck and muscles fading away about 95% better. I am assuming the pains in my muscles, lymph areas were the candida die off, but I don’t know for sure.
My question is do you recommend that I start the protocol over so I continue on the Candida Support Pack for 60 days in a row? Any other feedback so this doesn’t happen again if I continue?
