Keto Creamy Hot Chocolate

Yield 2 cups Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

2 cups coconut or almond milk, unsweetened

1/2 cup organic whipping cream or coconut heavy whipping cream

5 tbsp. cocoa powder

2 squirts liquid stevia

Pinch of sea salt

Optional:

1/2 tsp caramel stevia

Instructions:

Step 1: Whisk the cocoa powder and salt together in small mixing bowl (this will prevent any lumps from forming).

Step 2: In a small saucepan, heat almond milk and heavy cream over medium-low heat.

Step 3:  Whisk in the cocoa mixture and stevia until mixed and dissolved and then remove from heat and serve with dairy free whipping cream (optional)

There is a lot of variety in how you choose to make this.  Depending upon which ingredients you have access too and your body tolerates the best you can choose to make this recipe with unsweetened coconut, almond, flax or hemp milk.

If you do well with grass-fed dairy you can use organic grass-fed milk and heavy whipping cream.  However, there are many who have food sensitivities to dairy proteins so we made this recipe using unsweetened almond milk and coconut heavy whipping cream.

I love drinking this creamy hot chocolate in the winter time.  It is low-carb, keto and fat burning and tastes delicious!  Try this out and I believe it will be a family favorite.

There are a lot of great health benefits to chocolate as it is rich in polyphenolic antioxidants and it boosts feel-good neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and endorphins.  Adding in chocolate with good fats found in coconut, almond or grass-fed dairy helps to promote fat burning and cognition.

  1. Our 12yo daughter has made a keto hot chocolate and we all loved it. I’ll have to show her THIS recipe!

    A couple things though, some folks might want to know when to add the sweetener. It’s not in the directions.
    Also, where do you get the extract? What’s your favorite brand?

  2. My favorite Hot Chocolate is: 8oz. unsweetened organic almond milk, 2 heaping spoons of cacao powder, 1 scoop collagen, 1 squirt stevia, pinch of cinnamon and pinch of cayene pepper. This is great especially for seniors.

  3. Since I have frequent kidney stones I need to avoid stevia since a single packet has up to 47 mg of oxalates, I use Monk Fruit sweetener since it has no oxalate. The University of Chicago says as little as 30mg of oxalate can germinate a kidney stone.After 16 kidney stones from 2001 to 2017 I have not had one for almost 5 years. I also take 1000mg of magnesium citrate a day.

    1. Plants create oxalates to protect themselves from the aluminum in the soil, air and water. Where ever there are high levels of aluminum in the soil, you’re going to find high levels of oxalates in that food. At this point there are few places on the planet that are not sprayed from HAARP. Herbs like Chanca Pietra are helpful clearing stones in both the kidneys and the gallbladder. There are others. Thank you for this site Dr Jockers!

  4. What brand of cacao do you purchase to avoid higher levels of cadmium?
    What about Earthtone Foods organic cacao powder?

    1. For some people, yes, but not all have the same sensitivities to different proteins in dairy. I can eat aged cheese but not fresh cheese, because the aging process removes the casein protein.

  5. Round up is used in Almond growing. It is also NOT Carb free, and really how low in carbs is it? A huge % of the almond crops are sprayed! Using almond milk may not be such a great idea. I’ve switched to Organic almonds from Italy to be safe. Paraquat is replacing alot of the Round up spraying which is even worse as it causes Parkinson’s. It takes only parts per trillion of these chemicals to cause damage to the body. Please note that all foods should be organic. Lets put these chemical companies out of business. Dr. Jockers has the BEST articles!

  6. Hello!

    Thank you for this delicious tasting recipe! I do have one concern having followed the link for your cacao powder provider. The list of ingredients show 1g of sugar per teaspoon of cacao powder. Your recipe calls for 2 1/2 TABLESPOONS. I estimate that to be 6g sugar per serving. Would you agree or did I miss something? 😊

  7. Try carob instead of any sweetener. Once you’re used to the taste it’s delicious. Carob’s also good for diabetics I think. I use one tsp cocoa powder and two of carob (preferably organic), if I want a sweet drink and no carob if I want a refreshing drink. I make cocoa like I’d make instant coffee. It took me around 15 tries to really enjoy it. At first I couldn’t recognise unsweetened cocoa as a taste at all. I got the idea from my Aunt Katharine. Now I really enjoy it. I find sweetened cocoa sickly.

    1. I do too (just cocoa and water). Though, I prefer with milk. Sometimes I add butter …to water cocoa or milk cocoa. And ya, I agree with others on these comments: organic is best. Grass fed is best. From what I read, grass fed cows live 3 times longer than grain fed cows. That’s a pretty startling number.

  8. Try using cacao versus cocoa powder for the additional nutrients. This one is very similar to the keto recipe I was making. The caramel stevia addition is definitely something I will try; drops of peppermint is also a nice treat. A pinch of coffee crystals also brings out the cacao flavor.

  10. I’ve eliminate ALL sweet foods from my diet for several years now. It has been the best thing for my health. That means I don’t use stevia nor ANY of the keto sweeteners. The only sweet things I get come from whole foods… like berries. I’m very happy with the supreme health I’ve enjoyed for over 25 years of following the keto diet. I discovered ketogenic eating BEFORE it became a thing in weight-loss dieting.

  11. What ever happened to Dr. Atkins diet? The very first Keto diet in the 80’s.I know there are still some bars out there but it is never mentioned anymore as a Keto diet. It puts you into Ketosis very easily.

  12. What brands of either dark chocolate bars or powders do you use? New info in consumer report talk about lead and cadmium levels in al! Dark Chocolate. I have tendency to purchase European chocolate if I can find it even A!di’s brand. Now almost afraid of consuming and I love dark chocolate in small doses.

  13. If you would comment on where to
    Purchase some of the ingredients i.e. caramel stevia. As some followers have asked it would be helpful. I have U.C. So most chocolate causes me major bouts of
    Diarrhea.Plus the cadmium in chocolate is troubling and dangerous.also as one reader commented stevia has high oxolate levels.
