h pylori

The Damaging Effects of H Pylori Infections:

H pylori is an opportunistic bacterium that can infect and spread rapidly in individuals with a compromised immune system (1).  While this bacterium is natural and beneficial to our bodies in small amounts, it can be extremely dangerous when allowed to propagate without control.  This infection is the leading cause of stomach ulcers, poor digestion and stomach cancer (2).

It is estimated that over 50% of the world’s population has elevated levels of H Pylori (3).  This microorganism can spread very quickly through the saliva and so it is easily transmitted.

It is very common to see entire family’s test positive for this infection.  Immune compromised individuals can develop this through sharing a drink, kissing and eating off the same dishes as an infected individual.

h pylori

H.Pylori and Stomach Ulcers:

Dr Barry Marshall won the Nobel Prize in medicine in 2005 for his discovery that H Pylori was the cause of peptic ulcers (4).  This breakthrough reversed decades of medical information that held that ulcers were caused by stress, spicy foods and too much acid.  It is still understood that chronic stress lowers the immune response and makes one susceptible to a H Pylori infection.

Most medical researchers thought that the stomach was too inhospitable environment for bacteria to develop.  In order to prove his theory, in 1984 Marshall infecting himself with H. Pylori and developed a resulting condition of gastritis.  He did a pre and post endoscopy to analyze the cultures in his stomach and it was shown that H Pylori was able to propagate in the stomach and shut down the stomach’s ability to produce adequate hydrochloric acid.

The Hazards of an H.Pylori Infection:

H.Pylori is a very sophisticated microorganism that has incredible adaptive advantages that give it the ability to survive the stomach’s harsh environment.  It produces an enzyme called “urease” which breaks down the urea in the stomach into carbon dioxide and ammonia.

This causes belching and halitosis (bad breath) for the individual and it neutralizes the acidifying effects of hydrochloric acid (5).  This can cause a viscious cycle of poor digestion, poor nutrient absorption and the creation of inflammatory byproducts.

Hydrochloric acid is necessary for creating an acidic environment in the stomach to digest protein and ionize minerals.  This also helps to stimulate bile release from the gallbladder to effectively metabolize fat in the small intestine.  Without these key functions working optimally we become at risk for anemia, thyroid problems, osteoporosis and autoimmunity (6).

The secretion of mucous protects the stomach lining from irritation by food stuffs and microorganisms.  H Pylori reduces the stomach’s ability to produce mucous and irritates the stomach lining.

This creates a silent level of inflammation until the irritation become so severe that enough pain receptors fire off.  This is the pathogenesis of stomach ulcers.

h pylori

More Challenges with H Pylori Bacteria:

H Pylori is a gram negative bacteria which means that it has two cell walls.  Gram positive bacteria have one cell wall.  This double outer layer protects the bacteria and makes it harder for anti-microbial drugs and herbs to effect the organism.  Other gram negative bacteria include salmonella, E.coli and shigella among others.

Most doctors try to kill off any form of bacterial infection with antibiotics.  However, gram negative bacteria contain “efflux pumps” within their cell walls that have the ability to disperse antibiotic medications (7).

This protects the organism and can be extremely hazardous to the individual.  The efflux pumps help the organism survive and adapt and develop antibiotic resistant capabilities.

The cell wall material of gram-negative bacteria is also a highly potent inflammatory mediator.  This material is called lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and is extremely toxic to the liver and signals major inflammatory processes in the body when it is released into the blood stream in high amounts (8).

LPS is also called an endotoxin and is one of the major reasons why leaky gut syndrome is so hazardous to the body (9).  With leaky gut, the LPS gets out into circulation where it can drive up inflammation throughout the body.

h pyloriThe Most Common Symptoms (10, 11):

Abdominal Pain (mild- severe)

Bloating and distension

Belching and Gastric reflux

Constant bad breath

Mild nausea

Other issues that can be caused by a H Pylori infection include pernicious anemia which is a B12 deficiency (12).  Your stomach produces a protein called intrinsic factor which allows the small intestine to absorb B12.

H Pylori affects the stomach’s ability to produce intrinsic factor which causes this problem.  The major symptoms associated with pernicious anemia are constant fatigue, shortness of breath, pale skin, swollen tongue and nausea.

H Pylori and Long-Term Health Problems

H Pylori disrupts the digestive process so it can lead to inflammation throughout the gut and gastrointestinal permeability.  This state of leaky gut can also cause iron-deficient anemia, irritable bowel symptoms with fluctuating diarrhea and constipation and ulcerative colitis.

Since gut health is intimately related to brain health, an H Pylori infection can lead to depression, anxiety and trouble concentrating (13).   Altered digestion also increases food sensitivities and autoimmune reactions.  This can lead to any number of autoimmune conditions that are so prevalent in our society today.

Testing for H Pylori Infection:

There are several different ways of testing for an H Pylori infection.

1)   Stool Testing:  This is considered the gold standard in H Pylori diagnosis as it counts the actual particles of the H Pylori organism.  This is the test I use with clients to find out if they are infected.

2)    Blood Tests:  These tests look for antibodies to the H Pylori organism and will test for IgA, IgG and IgM reactions.  If these antibodies test positive it is a clear diagnosis of an infectious process.  Research has shown that this is a good test for acute infections but long-term infections and individuals with weakened immunity often do not have elevated anti-bodies.

The other issue with H Pylori antibodies is they may be present even when the infection is under control.  This means you will test positive even you are actually negative and the organisms are in their proper numbers.

3)    H Pylori Breath Test:  The H Pylori organism produce urease which breaks down urea in the stomach into ammonia and carbon dioxide.  The breath test measures for elevated CO2 that is produced from this reaction.

4)    Endoscopy:  This is a highly invasive procedure where a scope is inserted into the esophagus and stomach.  This is stressful on the body and does a poor job of analyzing for the presence of this infection but it can see the results of the infection such as irritation, ulcerations and cancer in the stomach.

The most well-rounded test that looks at H Pylori with great accuracy and also maps out the entire microbiome and looks for a wide variety of pathogens and markers of gut health is the GI MAP stool analysis you can find here

Natural Solutions for This Condition:

It is easier to treat an H Pylori infection the earlier it is caught and diagnosed.  An anti-microbial nutrition and supplement plan is necessary for this issue.  One could easily begin by drinking clean water with fresh squeezed lemon and/or apple cider vinegar (ACV) throughout the day.

The organic acids in the lemon and ACV are anti-microbial and will help reduce the H Pylori count.  An anti-microbial diet that uses lots of garlic, onions and herbs such as oregano, basil, thyme, ginger and turmeric in your meals will also help fight off this infection.

It is important to avoid sugar and other processed foods and to not eat late at night.  When you eat late at night before bed, it sits in the stomach longer and allows more time for the H pylori to feed and reproduce.

Doing oil pulling with coconut oil – 3x daily for 10-15 minutes of swishing will help reduce stress on the immune system and aid its ability to reduce H Pylori counts.

For individuals with a mild infection this may be enough to normalize H Pylori counts.  Those with moderate to severe infections will need a specific protocol with intensive anti-microbial supplementation to get the H Pylori counts down low enough for the body to heal properly.

Supplements to Help Beat H Pylori:

There are certain supplements that I recommend to help beat H Pylori.  These include GI Clear which contains the proper array of anti-microbial herbal compounds to reduce H Pylori counts.  In particular, artemisinin (sweet wormwood) and berberine compounds are particularly effective against H Pylori (14, 15).

To use GI Clear to reduce H Pylori, I recommend taking 2 caps – 2 times daily away from meals.  H Pylori is tough to get rid of and this product alone will rarely do it.

Be sure to also use the Gut Repair powder, Mega IgG Powder, Pyloguard and the Gastro Soothe in order to get the results you want.  Typically taking these for 6-10 weeks will eliminate the H Pylori and improve your gastric mucosa.

Gastro Soothe

Gastro Soothe is a blend of botanical extracts, all of which support a healthy gastric microbial balance and help maintain a healthy gastric mucosa. This formula includes mastic gum, MSM, zinc carnosine, DGL and vitamin C.

This product is extremely helpful for reducing H Pylori, healing ulcers and improve the gastric lining.  In addition, it is helpful for reducing heartburn, bloating, gut pain and nausea.

To use this product to reduce H Pylori, I recommend taking 2 caps – 2 times daily, away from meals.  I typically have my clients taking it first thing in the morning and before bed.

Pyloguard:

Certain strains of probiotics have been shown to compete with and reduce H Pylori levels and keep them under control.  PyloGuard™ is a dietary supplement designed to support the body’s natural processes for elimination.

It contains patented Lactobacillus reuteri DSM17648, which can attract specific organisms in the intestine and support their removal via the digestive tract. This particular strain of L. reuteri specifically binds to H. pylori in the stomach and supports overall digestive health.  We recommend using 1 capsule in water, 1 time daily on an empty stomach.

Gut Repair:

This product is designed to help heal the stomach and intestinal lining, reduce H Pylori content and improve stomach acid production.  The licorice root within Gut Repair helps to stimulate the release of secretin which enhances the stomach’s mucus lining. This gives it its characteristic demulcent (agent that soothes and relieves irritation in mucosal membranes) properties (16).

This is why licorice is revered for its use with stomach ulcers, because it helps protect and heal the gastric lining.  It is also a powerful defense against the H Pylori bacteria (17).  This product also contains L-glutamine to repair the stomach and intestinal lining, aloe vera which is a powerful stomach soothing agent and arabinogalactan to help foster the development of a good microbiome.

We recommend taking 1 scoop, 2 times daily in water.  You can add the Mega IgG Powder to this mix as well.

h pylori

Mega IgG Powder

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the most abundant antibody in the system and can be found in blood and extracellular fluid, allowing it to control infections in the body. IgG antibodies can bind a variety of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, as well as their toxic byproducts such as urease and LPS.

Binding these toxins will neutralize them and allow the immune system to safely remove them from the body.   We recommend using the Mega IgG Powder which is a bovine serum produced immunoglobulin G that is a powerful binder for H Pylori and LPS.

Take 1 scoop, 2 times daily with or without food.  Mix powder into 8 oz. of water or liquid of your choice. Stir for 20 seconds.  You can also mix this with the Gut Repair powder.

Final Thoughts

An H Pylori infection is a serious condition that is more common that most people realize.  If h pylori goes untreated, it can lead to nutritional deficiencies, digestive problems, heartburn and even stomach ulcers and stomach cancer.

The conventional approach to treating this is with antibiotics.  We believe this condition is often better treated by following a healthy lifestyle and supplement protocol as described in this article.

  1. Dr. Jockers Love your health site,,, Do you know any thing about IgE that was tested positive in my blood, I have arthritis bad in the spinal , neck, mid & lower back, also stomach . I’m just wondering if food sensitivety that I have has any thing to do with IgE in my blood, and also can I order your herbs & vitamins from you , The reason I ask is I’m from Manitoba Canada

  2. Thank you so much for your prompt reply along with informations, & also it’s easier to understand being visual. I did 1-st test 2012 & 2014, Antibiotics was given but it wasn’t effective, I did Endoscopy again on last December, & this time I refuse to take Antibiotic & I asked other avenue?, She said “don’t eat Broccoli, hot foods & alkohol, & lets check again in 3-years, & take pepto-bismal(?).”
In short: frustratrated w/ 2-Doctors. lots of Googlings. confused w/ overwhelming informations.
You show 3-kinds of products & if you can recommand which?.
I am 74. I use Coconut oil, lemon, ACVinegar, Tumerlic, Ginger, Garlic, onion
    often. (should be more consistant).
    Should I continue take Antibiotic?.

Anyway I enjoy wathing your video. Very clear/easy to understand.

  3. I was diagnosed having helibater pylori through stool analysis and had endoscopy and nothing found through endoscopy. My doctor prescribed mePantoprazole 40mg . once daily before breakfast on empty stomach since January. My acid reflux has declined a little bit to the point that I can eat now but acid reflux still there. So am careful what I eat. No antibiotic was given to me to get rid of the pylori.

What can you suggest I should do. Thank you.

  4. I was just reading an article at the nih.gov website (National Institutes of Health) about a youth who had attention deficit issues from 2nd grade onward, and then the onset of mood disorder and psychosis at age 15 or 16. Doctors ran tests at that point and discovered the cause — he had a B12 deficiency. But his diet was not deficient in B vitamins. He had malabsorption due to H Pylori. After the H Pylori infection was eradicated with antibiotics his mental symptoms disappeared. I was also reading about a study there where they discovered Parkinsons patients who had H Pylori were not able to absorb their medications. After eradication of the H Pylori they did much better. I would be curious how much of the Parkinsons itself was caused by these patients’ potentially lifelong H Pylori infection and I bet we’re going to hear more in future about how H Pylori causes malabsorption effects and disorders, including “mental” and “brain” effects. Unfortunately even when people know they have gastric problems/reflux they usually just get treated with anti-reflux meds and antacids instead of being checked for H Pylori. And now we’re learning those reflux meds can cause malabsorption problems themselves! I bet we’ll start seeing class action lawsuits regarding these drugs before long.

  5. I was diagnosed with HPylori took antibiotics but still had symptoms got second dose I feel the same. Lump in throat, stomach burns, chest pains

  6. Hello!! I was treated for the H Pylori and developed neuropathy!! This is some pain I wouldn’t wish on any one!!! I also have bubbling in my stomach from time to time! Yet I can’t get rid of the odor of sewage!!! Eating and drinking even sweating make’s me smell worse!!! Wash after wash it still come right back!!! Didn’t have any of these problems before being contaminated by water!!!

  7. This is a wonderful article! I’ve been searching for someone that has a protocol for aeromonas caviae. I’m wondering if you do Dr. Jockers? Or is there someone else out there that can help. This has been going on for years now and I’ve avoided taking antibiotics because I know how bad they can be especially for someone like me that’s be dealing with gut issues my entire adult life.If anyone who reads this has any idea where I can get helpful information about this horrible bacteria I would be so grateful.

    1. Hey Nancy, there is not a whole lot of research on this infection with natural treatments. You could try the protocol outlined above in this article for 30-90 days. If that does not work then I would suggest getting with one of our couches on a plan!

  8. I was diagnosed with H-Pylori via Endoscopy last Dec. My major sympton is coughing, particularly after eating. I treated with Anti Biotics and Omeprosol and had mild success. It has not returned and I my Dr. has again prescribed the anti biotics but I’m looking for more help. Any ideas are appreciated.

  9. Ron, one thing not mentioned on here is Mastic Gum.

I am off the Lanszaprazole (took for 4 weeks) and in my 2nd week ‘washout’ before taking the HP Test.

With nothing to lose, I am day 5 of the Mastic Gum (I take 1 gram in the Morning, 1 before Bed) and it is really noticeable. I am hoping it is helping me clear it before the test next week but if not, I would still recommend it to anyone suffering from an inflamed Stomach.

  10. H. Pylori infection gives chills and makes the immune system week . I m suffering from h pylori since 16 years. Earlier it was not that bad but it is troubling me since 5 yrs. I hv done antibiotic course twice. It became mild for 2 yrs. Again causing problems. Besides other symptoms I feel feverish when it attacks me severely. Gradually it slows down ur digestive system . Vit d and vit b12 deficiency causes severe pain in my joints. I feel reflux , burning in stomach , weight loss , . …

  11. Take anti bacterial diet plan.
Raspberry ,blueberry , kiwi , turmeric , liquorice tea, chenopodium Ambrosiod tea. Garlic , coconut oil .

  12. I was diagnosed but not told or treated for H Pylori in December 2017, after having both an endoscopy and & colonoscopy. My symptoms include; stomach burning, bloating,IBS, lack of appetite & 25lb weight lost among other symptoms since March 2017. My PCP nor GI Drs advised me of H Pylori. It was brought to my attention after I was dx with breast cancer. My oncologist radiation doc advised me of dx. I’m told that I’ll need treatment for H Pylori prior to treatment for the breast cancer. So I now have an appointment with the GI dr in two weeks to hopefully get treatment. The only thing I was told after the Dec 2017 colonoscopy is the GI dr recommended a lower GI exam with Barium.Do I need to have lower GI test prior to getting treatment for H Pylori? I still have same symptoms since March 2017.. I’m really trying to be proactive after knowing the drs failed to onfirm & treat me for H Pylori for at approximately 5 months.

  13. Dr, hello I was diagnosed with chrons disease at age 19, now I’m 59. Between those years several bowl reactions had Fistulas multiple. Very bad.. Had iliostomy 15 yrs ago left with 5 feet of intestine left. . Have had no problems no need for GI Dr until April 2018. Serve abdominal pain said chronic Hpylori . The antibiotics killed my stomach we are in June going back for follow up.. Still uncomfortable. .Thanks Darlene

  14. I was found to have a pylori infection via a blood test. I completed 10 days of triple therapy 3 weeks ago. Sometimesafter im eating food I feel kinda burning in my chest, I feel tired and dizzy I have no concentration,I don’t remember very well .I think deficiency vitamins b12 .I have constipation .I want to know what i have to do for removing this illness

  15. Hi Dr, I have been suffering from numb legs, hand and fore-arms for 14 years. I am injecting myself with vitamin B12 on a weekly basis which is currently my only solution to control the numbness partially. Doctors suggested that I am B12 deficient.
I am A+ blood-group and suspected low stomach acid.
Is this my only solution for the rest of my life?

    1. Check for MTHFR gene mutation. Could be methylation issue. Also, MMA better biomarker than regular blood serum test for Vitamin B deficiency.

  16. Hi Dr. I had an endoscopy 8/17 but was not informed that i had h-pylori until 12/17. I’ve had 2 antibiotic courses in 7 months. Presently, I’m suffering from severe itchy burning rashes on my upper inner thighs and buttocks, immediately after taking the last antibiotic course. My only relieve comes from applying fresh Aloe Vera to the area, 3-4 × day. I’m taking a probiotic, acv, vit C, kimchi, aloe vera, lemon water and lots of prayer. The rash is spreading. I have topical Zinc, but I stopped using it. Is this toxic waste leaving my body? I need relieve soon. Can I sit in Epsom salt water? Please advise. Thank you.

  17. I hope all of you are doing well.
    Hello Dr,
I had been diagnosed with H. Pylori positive last year after a long search and treated with antibiotics successfully. After that I was well with less gas, less burping and less acid reflux.
Last month I started having bit swallowing problem near the esophagus area. Whatever I was eating solid or liquid, I was feeling pain below my shoulder blade at the back. I consulted my doctor and he did blood test to check my liver, pancreas, gallbladder and hemoglobin level. The blood test result was good and all lungs are functioning well. Later, I requested my doctor to do breath test incase H. Pylori returned back again. Waiting for breath test result now.
I am having mild wrist joint pain for the last few weeks. Just wondering whether H. Pylori and Wrist joint pain is somehow related? Will apple cider vinegar help to reduce the joint pain you think?

I would like to share with you that I am eating broccoli, canberry juice, green tea and Yakult probiotics hoping they will fight with H. Pylori if present. I am also taking Omeprazole twice a day before meal based on doctor’s prescription to protect my stomach lining. I am avoiding sugary and oily fried food.

I wish the best health of all of you.
    Thanks.

  18. Hello!
    This 2018 spring I contracted h.pylori.
I eradicated it with protonix, clarithomyacin, and amoxicillin.
Before my breath test, I took sucralfate four times a day.
    My stomach was very painful.
Although my breath test results were negative for h.pylori I continued to have stomach pain.
I had an endoscopy. The doctor said I had no ulcers but gastritis.
I was put back on protonix and continued taking sucralfate four times a day.
I have been taking these two medicines all summer into the fall.
Last week I stopped taking both!
I felt that the medicines made me depressed. I would cry over matters that I normally would just think over.
And I noticed that though I took both medicines, my stomach still hurt everyday.
Sometimes a little and sometimes a lot.

Now that I am off both medicines my stomach continues to have a low, dull ache that comes and goes. But, my mind is more clear. I do not feel so repressed.

I plan to see another doctor for feedback.

    Any thoughts?

  21. Hello Dr David, my name is Maureen. I was diagnosed with hpylori when my child was 4 months, and the doctor told me to wait until she was at least 8 months. On January this year they gave me the hpylori kit, I followed everything that I was told for two weeks, but now I still have the same symptoms and I don’t know what to do since the doctor said I can’t get medication on hpylori when am pregnant . And am 9weeks now. Please help. Am from Kenya.

  22. Hi, my girlfriend has had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass about 13 years ago.. She also just went into remission from bone cancer… The chemo has literally damaged what stomach she has.. She recently just got diagnosed with H pylori and her docs are not into any natural remedies and only antibiotics.. I understand she may needs those as a quick fix but ultimately it’s only gonna work so long before it comes back.. She has also passed this on to me as it can be transmitted through salvia.. Please help the best you can.. Thanks for your time..

  23. Hello dr. 24. Hi Dr,

Should I do your biofilm protocol for 14 days before starting treatment for h pylori? I think (I know) I have the most resistant h pylori! Have been fighting this infection for almost 2 yrs and after 2 rounds of antibiotics and a few natural protocols I think I need to remove a BIOFILM from my body before taking more of the natural supplements, herbs etc. Thank you

    1. Hey Evelyn, You can do a combination of the Gastro Soothe, Pepti-Guard and the GI Clear which will get the biofilm and the H Pylori together. Do 4-6 weeks – Take 2 caps of each of these, 2 times daily away from meals. You can take them all together if it works well for you.

  25. Hi Dr. Jockers,
I bought all the supplements and I followed the protocol outlined in the article for treating H pylori ( confirmed through blood test; over the years I tried to get rid off this bacteria with antibiotics, but it seems that it came back). I took your treatment for 2 weeks and I interrupted because I started to feel unwell. I jumped right away on a bone broth fasting for 4 days ( with no meds), and after 1 day break I restarted the protocol. I started to have very strong stomach pain and feel very bad! Are these regular side effects from meds?! It seems I have to cancel the whole treatment because of pain. I feel very sorry and disappointed for that… What would you recommend or what are your thoughts?! Thank you!

    1. Sorry to hear about this Angela! You may have a stomach ulcer. This is the most common reason for stomach pain on H Pylori protocol. I would advise reading this article and trying in the Gastro Soothe product https://drjockers.com/stomach-ulcers-causes-natural-solutions/

While we try to provide a protocol that will work for the majority of folks, everyone is unique and different. It is possible you are having a bad reaction to one of the ingredients – it may be the grapefruit seed extract in the GI Regulator.
